Cllr Geoff Heathcock

Liberal Democrat County Councillor for Queen Ediths division

Calmer approach required as Second attempt is made to examine County Council allowances scheme

Geoff who is a Member of the County Council Standards Committee has expressed his worries that the discussion surrounding allowances for a second time in a few months will once again be drowned out by lots of hot air and ill informed comment from sections not only of the Political establishment in the County but by many armchair pundits – who simply dont know what Councillors actually do.

The “debate” if you can call it that last Autumn was taken over by those who shoutest loudest but did not necessarily have all the facts before them but clearly played to the gallery. We have to accept that the whole issue of Local Government allowances is toxic – but until and unless any Government changes the rules, every Council and a Panel set up for the purpose has to come too a view, it clearly wont please everyone that is the nature of the beast. I am clear that some calm reflection and indeed calm imput is now needed as a new Panel is formed and takes the process forward from there.
